Artificial Intelligence and it’s struggles

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and it’s struggles

Picture the intelligence of the smartest person you know and multiply this intelligence with the biggest number you can come up with.  Additionally, imagine this person knowing everything mankind has ever discovered. Unbelievable, right! Now ask yourself all of the questions you ever had. How long until the sun stops shining? Can we prevent cancer from killing 10 million people every year? Getting an answer to all of these questions is only one of the reasons scientists are developing AI.

The term AI covers all software capable of thinking or learning on its own. Don’t worry, none of the developed software – that we know of – is taking over the world just yet. The self-learning runner Google created is a nice example of what is achieved so far. The company made (and visualised, a must see if you ask me) a software that had to find the fastest way to move from one location to another. But why is this a good example? This little runner’s software was programmed to go from point A to point B repetitively and remember the information of the more successful runs and using that information for further attempts. It sure made a few ridiculous attempts at first, because it lacks common sense. Not to mention that it definitely didn’t wonder what it was doing and why, since it has no self-awareness.

If they were to develop a software that has common sense, it could solve problems we humans are struggling with. It will be hard, but computer science has come a long way, they will figure this out.
Developing software with self-awareness on the other hand could be fatal. If this software decided to mess around on the internet, it could store itself in the cloud an become almost undeletable. With everything being online these days, things would go south very fast.

Fortunately we can’t recreate what we don’t understand.  To implement self-awareness in computer software, we have to locate the section of the brain that gives us self-awareness. Once we find that area, we have to decode how those neurons and synapses characterise us humans. Until we figure out how to do that, we should think about how we want to approach true AI. We will achieve this without doubt, the question is when and if we’ll be ready.
